This is an excellent little heater. I had the previous version for and it used it almost daily for about two years, I just bought this new one to replace it. It's very quiet, easy to use, and puts out a good amount of heat. My favorite feature is the thermostat, I can set it so that while I'm sleeping it keeps at a constant temp. It turns off at the desired temp and turns back on if it gets too cold. It's very comforting to know that I won't wake up freezing.

I love this little heater. For the size it can warm up an average size room in under ten minutes. It takes a lot to get me cold, but I work from home and sit next to a window and with the colder temps sometimes even I get cold. This heater takes care of it in no time. Even more, it has an auto shut off when the heater gets to hot or something blocks the airway. I didn't see that mentioned when I bought it, but I had a throw blanket draped over my lap, and a part of it was obstructing the path of the heater's vents. I noticed suddenly that the heater was no longer going (its a very quiet whisper and you'll only notice it if the room is completely silent) and when I looked down the heater had gone off. I first thought it had broken, but then I noticed the blanket was obscuring it. So I removed the blanket and move the heater back further. About five minutes later it came back on after the unit had cooled down. I was already happy because of the tip-over shut off feature, but this overheating protection made me even happier with my purchase. Plus my electric bill has been a lot lower since I don't have to turn on the main heater when I just want to warm up one room. I bought one for my mother as well, because she's always cold, and she loves it. PLUS in the warmer months, it can work nicely as a small fan. Its not as powerful as a fan, but it does create a gentle breeze. It has two cylecs for the heat, high or low, but you can determine the intensity of the heat it puts off using the secondary control knob. A great product for the price.

After a bit of browsing the web I found that this was the replacement for my obsoleted fan/limit switch. It turns out the only difference was the addition of a manual fan control. Other than that, it was completely identical. Installation and adjustment was pretty easy. I got a great deal at Amazon. My local supply house wanted about twice what I paid (around $60). Just a word of caution, if you have a low voltage control be sure to remove the link (see instructions)!

PROS:
* Quiet
* Does a good job heating the room it's in, though the room isn't big.
* The emergency shut-off tip-over mechanism is an external switch on the bottom; not something inside you have no control over.
* 3-year warranty. Be aware, though, that Unique Imports must be offering this, because there's nothing on the box or instructions that mentions this.

CONS:
* The orange power indicator light stays on, even when you turn the dial to "off". "OFF" should mean "EVERYthing off", not SOME things off. Only when you tip it over does the orange indicator light also shut off.

* Though the temperature controller/sensor in the HIGH HEAT switch position works fine, it is in the LOW HEAT switch position that the temperature sensor works poorly, if at all. If I carefully adjust it to the point where it just kicks on, it does NOT automatically shut off, even when the room reaches Miami summer beach hot, or NY City summer swelter. (Is this normal or a defect of the one I bought?) If this is true of all of them, do NOT leave this space heater unattended in a child's room or ANY room without frequent adult monitoring!

OTHER THOUGHTS:
I'll keep this for now, because it replaced a space heater that had become very noisy. It will be replaced if something better comes along. If you think that Amazon sells a better one somewhere, DO let me know!

This heater is very nice for the "draftier," colder room(s) that your central heating system can't reach. It also assures that heat, at the right temperature, is in the room when your central heater system's thermostat is in the hallway!
Consumer reports gives it high ratings and rightfully so; it is a simple, easy to use heater that is very quiet when it is on NON-FAN mode. Other space heaters with temperature settings only have a fan or electrical noise when they start up and stay on; this can wake you (or the baby/kids) up at night. This heater doesn't have that rude awakening "turn-on-and-start-the-heat-up" noise when your temperature drops below a certain point; it just releases the heat slowly. If you're a light sleeper, this heater is kind to your ears.
Like other space heaters, it has a quick heat FAN mode that can rapidly expel heat. Some owners may say that the fan is noisy, but it's relatively more quiet than the previous space heaters with fans that I've used in the past. Unlike those other heaters, the HZ-817's FANLESS mode starts heat slowly and keeps a nice warmth around itself and the room. When your desired temperature preset is reached, it then provides a "trickle" of heat to hold that temperature.
It is an intelligently designed product, and I also like the automatic shut off if the unit is accidentally tipped over.

I bought this fan about 3 years ago from Linens and Things for about $15 after rebate. Though the CFM is low, that can be a good thing, in that many other fans blow too hard on their low setting or are noisy. This one blows gently on the low setting but still can knock all the papers off your desk on the high setting. On both the low and medium settings, it is sufficiently quiet.

It doesn't take up a lot of space and is very easy to move around. It can be opened to be cleaned, though not nearly as easily as circular fans. The timer functions well enough.

It finally stopped working after 2.5-3 years of heavy use (as much as 18 hours a day during our summers in Los Angeles). So it did it's job pretty well, especially when considering what I paid for it. I haven't figured out yet what part of it broke, but seeing that the switches still work solidly, it might just be the motor. If I can repair it (e.g. it was merely a fuse or something else easy to fix), I'll amend this review. In the meantime, time to look for another one.

I don't know what the other reviews are talking about. I used this model in 2 different rooms, one a very very small square room, and another a large awkwardly shaped room, and given enough time it gets any of them toasty. The heat is intense and just as advertised it disperses evenly. The only reason I have to replace the last is that the knob broke. my fault I wasn't the most careful with it. in a small room with high traffic it was kicked around constantly and started to smell when the floor underneath was dirty. But it speaks volumes of the thing's performance that I'm replacing the last one from Walmart with the exact same one here. Mid price range, Good performance. Not the best, but worth it.
